The Astilbe ‘Montgomery’, Astilbe japonica, has wonderful deep red to scarlet-red flowers with dark red-bronze foliage changing to green in the spring. The flowers contrast wonderfully with the glossy foliage. Astilbe ‘Montgomery’ blooms in mid summer and is 20” tall and a plant width of 24”. Do not allow Astilbe ‘Montgomery’ to dry out. It is most successfully grown in a shady area but can tolerate some morning sun. A moist, well-drained area is key for this plant. In order to keep Astilbe looking good for the next year, do not cut it back in the winter, (the old foliage helps protect the plant from winter damage), but prune in early spring. Mullein - Summer Sorbet The Verbascum Summer Sorbet, 'Verbascum hybridum', also known as Mullein, has masses of magenta purple flowers with a hint of peach and raspberry eyes. The stalks arise off of large, glossy, green leaves, which add contrast to the flower color. It is said to be one of the most floriferous of all Verbascum. ‘Summer Sorbet’ has a plant height of 2’ and a plant spread of 12-18” and blooms from late spring into summer. This low maintenance perennial requires dry to medium soil and should be planted in full sun for best results. Verbascum will tolerate a wide range of soil conditions but must have good drainage or it could be fatal. ‘Summer Sorbet’ can be planted in rocky slopes to add color, as a border plant or in cottage gardens.
