Bean - Contender
The Bean Bush Snap Contender, 'Phaseolus vulgaris', is the earliest bean we could find. The Contender is tasty, stringless, and it takes only 40 days from sowing to harvest. You just won't find an earlier bean. Contender will tolerate hot temperatures and mildew and is very productive. Like other snap beans, Contender is stringless and excellent cooked or eaten right out of the garden. The beans are 6 inches long, thick, and slightly curved. The plants are 12 to 20 inches tall. Plant after the last average frost date. Snap beans prefer rich, organic, and well drained soil. Snap beans are ready to pick when the pod "snaps" or breaks in half cleanly. Aster - Tall Matsumoto The Aster Tall Matsumoto, 'Callistephus chinensis', is a florist quality cut flower variety with tall, strong stems and an unusual bi-color flower with a yellow center. This Aster has a very long vase life. It will provide an "end-of-the-season pick-me-up" with its dazzling, radiant, medium sized flowers. The 2 inch wide flowers have white petals tipped bright pink with contrasting yellow centers. The Tall Matsumoto blooms from mid to late summer up to the first hard fall frost. The Aster Milady prefers rich, deep, light soil. Add compost to improve marginal soil quality. Pinch off faded flowers to encourage new blooms. Plant in the spring after the last average frost date. This plant is excellent as a cut flower and the bright colors look great in any border. |
