Four OClock - Marvel of Peru

The Four O'clock Marvel of Peru, 'Mirabilis jalapa', has flowers that often open after 4 pm for late day drama. They are lightly fragrant. Four O'clock grows and flowers almost anywhere including hot, windy spots. The 2 inch long, 1 inch wide tubular shaped flowers appear in colors of crimson, red, scarlet, white, pink, and yellow. The Marvel of Peru blooms in summer through fall. Four O'clocks prefer full sun but will tolerate light shade. They also tolerate a wide range of soils but they prefer a sandy well drained location. Water frequently for best results. Plant in the spring after the last average frost date. Sorrel - Common The Sorrel or Common Sorrel, 'Rumex acetosa', is a hardy perennial. Sorrel is an underutilized vegetable in the United States and unjustifiably so. The fresh leaves are used by some to soothe canker sores. The Sorrel plant is 12 to 36 inches tall and has large, crinkled, arrow-shaped leaves. The plant is also called Sour Dock, Herb Patience, and Patience Dock. Plant the Sorrel 2 weeks before the average last frost date. In mild climates, Sorrel can be planted in the fall.
