The Chinese Flame tree, Koelreuteria bipinnata, is a deciduous tree that has a round canopy. It is a medium to rapid growing tree with medium green oval leaves. The beautiful yellow flowers, 2" long, in clusters 8-14" long, bloom June-August. The seed pods are long and orange, red or salmon-colored papery in color. They are lantern-like in appearance, form in fall. Chinese Flame trees are drought tolerant and can tolerate poor drainage, poor soils, smog and temperature extremes. It does best in full sun. Double Flowering Plum The Double Flowering Plum, Prunus triloba, is a handsome, hardy, vigorous growing small tree. This plum is noted for its double, bright pink flowers produced in profusion in April and May. Its medium green foliage in the summer changes to yellow-bronze in the fall. The flowers have both male and female organs and are pollinated by insects. This hardy plant thrives in a well-drained moisture-retentive loamy soil. It succeeds in sun to partial shade, but does best in full sun. Any pruning is best done soon after the plant has flowered. Plant as a specimen plant or in a buffer strip. The double flowering plum, which also goes by the name of Rose Tree of China, is a showstopper in May across the North.
