Harry Lauder’s Walkingstick
Harry Lauder’s Walkingstick, Corylus avellana 'Contorta', is noted for its contorted, twisted growth, making it a real conversation piece when grown as a specimen plant. This unique deciduous shrub has interesting gnarled and twisted branches so it is often not grown primarily for its blooms but for this unusual branching pattern. Harry Lauder's Walkingstick has terrific yellow fall foliage color with showy greenish-yellow catkins (as on pussy willows) that brighten the winter scene. It does well in large containers and likes full sun. It is a slow grower to 8 to 10 feet tall and wide and prefers well drained soil in sun to part shade. Chokeberry - Black The Black Chokeberry, Aronia melanocarpa 'black', is an open, upright, spreading, somewhat rounded but leggy, deciduous shrub which typically grows 3-6’ tall. It displays clusters of 5-petaled, white flowers in spring which are followed in early autumn by blackish purple, blueberry-sized fruits which usually do not persist into winter. Although technically edible, the fruits are extremely tart and bitter, and are not recommended for eating off the bush. Its ability to withstand wet conditions makes it suitable for growing along ponds, streams or water gardens. Easily grown in average, medium wet, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Best fruit production occurs in full sun. Spreads by root suckers to form colonies. |
