Pepper - Bell - Emerald Giant

The Pepper Bell Emerald Giant, 'Capsicum annuum', is a large, thick-fleshed green bell pepper that sweetens and turns red on the vine. Roasted, stuffed and baked, or eaten fresh in salads, Emerald Giants large, thick fleshed peppers have more vitamin C than an orange. Emerald Giant is a great container variety. The peppers are about 4 inches long and about 3. 5 inches wide amd grow on a plant that is about 2 foot tall. Transplant outside in the spring 3 to 4 weeks after last frost date. Note: To get a jump on the season transplant outside, use a walls-of-water or some black plastic to maintain and increase temperatures. Pinch off early flowers to encourage plant growth. Plant in average garden soil with sufficient organic matter. Peppers use quite a bit of water but prefer to be watered deeply and not too often. Blossom pruning will improve fruit size. Swiss Chard - Italian White Ribbed The Swiss Chard Italian White Ribbed, 'Beta Vulgaris', is almost the perfect vegetable. The leaves can be harvested from late spring continuing all the way to the first frost. It will also tolerate partial shade. Swiss Chard is actually a beet without the beet. instead of growing beets, the plant grows wide, dark green, heavily crumpled leaves that are very tasty. Plant in early spring, 2 to 4 weeks before last frost or as late as 2 months before first fall frost.
